RESUMO

AIMS: As a unique iron-dependent non-apoptotic cell death, Ferroptosis is involved in the pathogenesis and development of many human diseases and has become a research hotspot in recent years. However, the regulatory role of ferroptosis in the gut-liver-brain axis has not been elucidated. This paper summarizes the regulatory role of ferroptosis and provides theoretical basis for related research. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched PubMed, CNKI and Wed of Science databases on ferroptosis mediated gut-liver-brain axis diseases, summarized the regulatory role of ferroptosis on organ axis, and explained the adverse effects of related regulatory effects on various diseases. KEY FINDINGS: According to our summary, the main way in which ferroptosis mediates the gut-liver-brain axis is oxidative stress, and the key cross-talk of ferroptosis affecting signaling pathway network is Nrf2/HO-1. However, there were no specific marker between different organ axes mediate by ferroptosis. SIGNIFICANCE: Our study illustrates the main ways and key cross-talk of ferroptosis mediating the gut-liver-brain axis, providing a basis for future research.

RESUMO

AIMS: Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumonia (CRKP) is a global threat that varies by region. The global distribution, evolution, and clinical implications of the ST11 CRKP clone remain obscure. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter molecular epidemiological survey using isolates obtained from 28 provinces and municipalities across China between 2011 and 2021. We integrated sequences from public databases and performed genetic epidemiology analysis of ST11 CRKP. RESULTS: Among ST11 CRKP, KL64 serotypes exhibited considerable expansion, increasing from 1.54% to 46.08% between 2011 and 2021. Combining our data with public databases, the phylogenetic and phylogeography analyses indicated that ST11 CRKP appeared in the Americas in 1996 and spread worldwide, with key clones progressing from China's southeastern coast to the inland by 2010. Global phylogenetic analysis showed that ST11 KL64 CRKP has evolved to a virulent, resistant clade with notable regional spread. Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis identified BMPPS (bmr3, mltC, pyrB, ppsC, and sdaC) as a key marker for this clade. The BMPPS SNP clade is associated with high mortality and has strong anti-phagocytic and competitive traits in vitro. CONCLUSIONS: The high-risk ST11 KL64 CRKP subclone showed strong expansion potential and survival advantages, probably owing to genetic factors.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In this retrospective study, we aimed to evaluate the factors associated with the severity of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis in children aged under 2 years who were admitted to the Children's Hospital of Hebei between June 2018 and January 2019. METHODS: Sputum samples positive for RSV via multiplex PCR were subtyped using real-time PCR. Data collected included risk factors for disease severity, demographics, microbiology, and outcomes. RESULTS: Of the 82 children with RSV bronchiolitis, 79 were treated and discharged with improvement, while 3 died. All three patients had underlying medical conditions, including complex congenital heart disease and severe combined immunodeficiency. Further, disease severity was associated with preexisting underlying disease, fever duration, and bacterial co-infection, but not with the RSV subtype. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that an appropriate therapeutic regimen should include the detection of bacterial co-infections and the identification of underlying diseases for the effective management of severe RSV bronchiolitis.

RESUMO

The presence of residual antibiotics in the environment is a prominent issue. Photodegradation behavior is an important way of antibiotics reduction, which is closely related to dissolved organic matter (DOM) in water. The review provides an overview of the latest advancements in the field. Classification, characterization of DOM, and the dominant mechanisms for antibiotic photodegradation were discussed. Furthermore, it summarized and compared the effects of DOM on different antibiotics photodegradation. Moreover, the review comprehensively considered the factors influencing the photodegradation of antibiotics in the aquatic environment, including the characteristics of light, temperature, dosage of DOM, concentration of antibiotics, solution pH, and the presence of coexisting ions. Finally, potential directions were proposed for the development of predictive models for the photodegradation of antibiotics. Based on the review of existing literature, this paper also considered several pathways for the future study of antibiotic photodegradation. This study allows for a better understanding of the DOM's environmental role and provides important new insights into the photochemical fate of antibiotics in the aquatic environment.

RESUMO

Free space optical (FSO) communication has gained widespread attention due to its advantages, including high confidentiality, high communication capacity, and no limitation of spectrum. One of the great challenges in FSO communication is the transmission performance degradation in atmospheric turbulence channel due to wavefront distortion and scintillation. Here, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a 120 Gbit/s vector beam multiplexed coherent optical communication system with turbulence-resilient capacity. Four multiplexed vector beams, each carrying a 30 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signal, propagate through different turbulence conditions. The influence of turbulence channel on the vector beam impairments is experimentally investigated. Under the weaker turbulence conditions, the system bit error rates are below the forward error correction threshold of 3.8 × 10-3. In comparison with the Gaussian mode, the communication interruption probability of the vector beams system decreases from 36% to 12%-18% under stronger turbulence conditions.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Multiplex PCR methods have significantly improved the diagnosis of acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) in children. The ResP-CE System coupled with capillary electrophoresis is a highly specialized, automated, and expensive technology for detecting common pathogens in ARTIs. The XYRes-MCA System, a remarkably less expensive multiplex PCR instrument, employs hybridization for the detection of ARTI pathogens. Both methods detect 9 common microorganisms in ARTIs, i.e., RSV, FLUAV, FLUBV, ADV, PIV, HMPV, HBOV, HCOV, and MP. In this study, we aimed to compare the performance of these two methods in the detection of pathogens from sputum specimens collected from children with ARTIs. METHODOLOGY: Sputum specimens were collected from 237 hospitalized children with ARTIs. Nucleic acid was extracted on an automated workstation. The ResP-CE and XYres-MCA systems were applied to detect pathogens from the samples, and the test result agreement between the two methods was evaluated using Kappa statistics. RESULTS: The ResP-CE and XYres-MCA identified pathogens, single or in combination, in 151 (63.7%) and 171 (72.1%) of 237 samples, respectively. Approximately 85% of positive samples identified by either method contained a single pathogen. Moderate to almost perfect concordance between the two methods was found in detecting the following 7 pathogens: RSV, FLUAV, FLUBV, PIV, HMPV, HBOV, and MP. CONCLUSIONS: These two methods are comparable in detecting common pathogens of ARTIs in children. As XYres-MCA analysis is more cost-effective, it could play an important role in diagnosing ARTIs in children in less economically developed regions.

RESUMO

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a periodic psychiatric disorder with high prevalence in women of childbearing age, seriously affecting patients' work and life. Currently, the international first-line drugs for PMDD have low efficiency and increased side effects. Paeonol, a major component of the traditional Chinese medicine Cortex Moutan, has been applied in treating PMDD in China with satisfactory results, but the therapeutic mechanism is not fully understood. This study aims to evaluate the therapeutic effects and pharmacological mechanisms of paeonol on the main psychiatric symptoms and hippocampal damage in PMDD. We established a premenstrual irritability rat model by the resident-intruder paradigm and performed elevated plus maze and social interactions. And we employed the HE and Nissl staining techniques to observe the therapeutic effect of paeonol on hippocampal damage in PMDD rats. Subsequently, Elisa, qRT-PCR Array, Western Blotting, and cell models were utilized to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms through which paeonol intervenes in treating PMDD. In this study, we demonstrated the therapeutic effects of paeonol on irritability, anxiety, and social withdrawal behaviors in rats. In addition, we found that paeonol significantly reduced the serum corticosterone (CORT) level, improved hippocampal morphological structure and neuron number, and reduced hippocampal neuron apoptosis in PMDD rats. Paeonol reduced GRM5, GABBR2, ß-arrestin2, and GRK3 expression levels in hippocampal brain regions of PMDD rats and activated the cAMP/PKA signaling pathway. Inhibitor cell experiments showed that paeonol specifically ameliorated hippocampal injury by modulating the ß-arrestin2/PDE4-cAMP/PKA signaling pathway. The present study demonstrates, for the first time, that paeonol exerts a therapeutic effect on periodic psychotic symptoms and hippocampal injury in PMDD through inhibiting GRM5/GABBR2/ß-arrestin2 and activating cAMP-PKA signaling pathway. These findings enhance our understanding of the pharmacological mechanism underlying paeonol and provide a solid scientific foundation for its future clinical application.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory infections (ARI) are a threat to human health and survival, resulting in many paediatric hospitalisations. However, the epidemiological and clinical severity characteristics of the human parainfluenza virus (PIV), one of the most prevalent respiratory viruses, are not well understood in children. METHODS: To identify the epidemiological features of PIV infection, in 2019, hospitalised children with ARI were screened using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for PIV and 10 other common respiratory pathogens. Subtyping of randomly selected PIV-positive samples was performed using reverse transcription-PCR. Demographics, epidemiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and outcomes were compared between PIV subtypes. RESULTS: The annual detection rate for PIV was 14.9%, with a peak from April to September. Children under one year of age had the highest rate of PIV infection (45.5%) compared to other age groups. Of the 121 sequenced samples, 58.7%, 36.4% and 4.9% were positive for PIV-3, PIV-1 and PIV-2, respectively, and no PIV-4 was detected. Severe infections were associated with pre-existing underlying diseases and co-infections, but not with PIV serotype. After excluding cases of co-infection, we found that PIV-2 infection was associated with upper respiratory tract infections, whereas PIV-1 and PIV-3 mainly caused lower respiratory tract infections. Apart from the proportion of patients with fever, there were no significant differences among the three subtypes in terms of clinical symptoms, severity, and outcome. CONCLUSION: Here, PIV was the main pathogen causing ARI in hospitalised children. Appropriate attention should be paid to children with underlying diseases and co-infections to prevent the worsening of severe PIV infection.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is usually diagnosed in children, and the type of respiratory specimen is critical. Differences in pathogens detection between induced sputum (IS) and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) have not been evaluated. METHODS: In 2018, paired sputum and BALF samples from CAP hospitalised children with indications for bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) were subjected to multiplex PCR for the detection of 11 common respiratory pathogens. RESULTS: A total of 142 children with paired sputum and BALF were tested. The overall positivity rate was 85.9% (122/142) for sputum and 80.3% (114/142) for BALF. The two specimens presented almost perfect agreement between the detection on M. pneumoniae, influenza A, influenza B, bocavirus and RSV. In contrast, adenovirus had the lowest kappa value of 0.156, and a false negative rate (FNR) of 66.7%. Rhinovirus had the highest false positive rate (FPR) as 18.5%. The consistent rate was significantly higher in school-age children than those under 1 year old (p = .005). Bacterial co-infection in BALF specimens were observed in 14.8% (21/142). Of the 11 discordant pairs of specimens, 9 cases were sputum(+)/BALF(-) with adenovirus predominating. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that the consistency of results between sputum and BALF is pathogen specific. Careful consideration needs to be given to whether sputum can be used as a substitute for BALF when children are young or co-infections with bacteria are suspected.

RESUMO

In recent years, deep learning has revolutionized the field of medical image segmentation by enabling the development of powerful deep neural networks. However, these models tend to be complex and computationally demanding, posing challenges for practical implementation in clinical settings. To address this issue, we propose an efficient structured knowledge distillation framework that leverages a powerful teacher network to assist in training a lightweight student network. Specifically, we propose the Feature Filtering Distillation method, which focuses on transferring region-level semantic information while minimizing redundant information transmission from the teacher to the student network. This approach effectively mitigates the problem of inaccurate segmentation caused by similar internal organ characteristics. Additionally, we propose the Region Graph Distillation method, which exploits the higher-order representational capabilities of graphs to enable the student network to better imitate structured semantic information from the teacher. To validate the effectiveness of our proposed methods, we conducted experiments on the Synapse multi-organ segmentation and KiTS kidney tumor segmentation datasets using various network models. The results demonstrate that our method significantly improves the segmentation performance of lightweight neural networks, with improvements of up to 18.56% in Dice coefficient. Importantly, our approach achieves these improvements without introducing additional model parameters. Overall, our proposed knowledge distillation methods offer a promising solution for efficient medical image segmentation, empowering medical experts to make more accurate diagnoses and improve patient treatment.

RESUMO

The abandonment of rice terraces in hilly agroecosystems in recent decades has caused substantial changes in microbial characteristics and their impact on microbial necromass carbon (MNC) and soil organic carbon (SOC). Nevertheless, the regulatory mechanisms and impact pathways of MNC remain unclear. Here, soil samples were collected from 0 to 120 cm soil profiles in rice terraces, dry land (DL), and forest land (FL) for analysis. After converting rice terraces to DL and FL, MNC decreased significantly by 31.12% and 38.33%, while SOC decreased significantly by 51.26% and 29.87% respectively. These reductions are due to the loss of terrace management practices and associated functions. There were no significant changes in bacterial necromass carbon (BNC), whereas fungal necromass carbon (FNC) experienced a significant decrease. As a result, the decline in SOC may be primarily attributed to the reduction in FNC. BNC and FNC were regulated by bacterial life history strategies and fungal biomass, respectively. However, bacterial copiotrophs experienced a significant reduction after rice terrace abandonment. The regulation of BNC may be influenced by other factors, potentially offsetting the negative impact of abandonment. Dissolved organic carbon and bulk density were the primary control factors for bacterial community composition and fungal biomass, respectively. Additionally, the impact of soil layers on the alterations in MNC and SOC was more significant compared to the abandonment of rice terraces. These findings indicate that short-term abandonment of rice terraces results in a decrease in SOC, potentially compromising the ecological service function of the hilly agroecosystems. In the face of rapid population growth and global warming, it is crucial to minimize terrace abandonment and enhance utilization rates. This approach will effectively support sustainable terrace management and ecological services.

RESUMO

Background: Febrile seizures (FS) are a common cause of paediatric emergencies, but research on their aetiology and epidemiology are limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of central nervous system (CNS) pathogenic infections in patients with FS-associated hospitalization. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted in children under 16 years of age with FS-associated hospitalization. Demographic, clinical and laboratory data were recorded. Multiplex-PCR was performed on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples for nine viruses, nine bacteria and one fungus. Results: A total of 119 children were enrolled between June 2021 and June 2022. Of these, 83.2% had a final diagnosis of FS (69.7%) or FS plus (13.4%). In addition, epilepsy and encephalitis/meningitis were also found in 16.8% (20/119). Seven pathogens were identified from 9 CSF samples (7.6%), including viruses (EV, EBV, HHV-6) and bacteria (H. influenzae, S. pneumoniae, M. tuberculosis, S. putrefaciens). There were no significant clinical or laboratory differences between children who tested positive or negative for pathogens in the CSF, except for the presentation of herpes pharyngitis. Children with encephalitis/meningitis had longer hospital stays compared with those diagnosed with FS at discharge; abnormal EEG findings were significantly more common in patients with epilepsy. Conclusion: FS-associated hospitalized children may have viral or bacterial intracranial infections. Pathogen testing of CSF is an important basis for timely antibiotic or antiviral therapy when clinical and laboratory findings make FS indistinguishable from other CNS disorders.

RESUMO

Optical encryption is a promising approach to protecting secret information owing to the advantages of low-power consumption, parallel, high-speed, and multi-dimensional processing capabilities. Nevertheless, conventional strategies generally suffer from bulky system volume, relatively low security level, redundant measurement, and/or requirement of digital decryption algorithms. Here, we propose a general optical security strategy dubbed meta-optics-empowered vector visual cryptography, which fully exploits the abundant degrees of freedom of light as well as the spatial dislocation as key parameters, significantly upgrading the security level. We also demonstrate a decryption meta-camera that can implement the reversal coding procedure for real-time imaging display of hidden information, avoiding redundant measurement and digital post-processing. Our strategy features the merits of a compact footprint, high security, and rapid decryption, which may open an avenue for optical information security and anti-counterfeiting.

RESUMO

Computational hyperspectral devices that use artificial filters have shown promise as compact spectral devices. However, the current designs are restricted by limited types and geometric parameters of unit cells, resulting in a high cross-correlation between the transmission spectra. This limitation prevents the fulfillment of the requirement for compressed-sensing-based spectral reconstruction. To address this challenge, we proposed and simulated a novel design for computational hyperspectral devices based on quasi-random metasurface supercells. The size of the quasi-random metasurface supercell was extended above the wavelength, which enables the exploration of a larger variety of symmetrical supercell structures. Consequently, more quasi-random supercells with lower polarization sensitivity and their spectra with low cross-correlation were obtained. Devices for narrowband spectral reconstruction and broadband hyperspectral single-shot imaging were designed and fabricated. Combined with the genetic algorithm with compressed sensing, the narrowband spectral reconstruction device reconstructs the complex narrowband hyperspectral signal with 6 nm spectral resolution and ultralow errors. The broadband hyperspectral device reconstructs a broadband hyperspectral image (λ/λ ∼ 0.001) with a high average signal fidelity of 92%. This device has the potential to be integrated into a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) chip for single-shot imaging.

RESUMO

In recent years, breakthroughs in bioinformatics have been made with the discovery of many functionally significant non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). The discovery of these ncRNAs has further demonstrated the multi-level characteristics of intracellular gene expression regulation, which plays an important role in assisting diagnosis, guiding clinical drug use and determining prognosis in the treatment process of various diseases. microRNAs (miRNAs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and circular RNAs (circRNAs) are the three major types of ncRNAs that interact with each other. Studies have shown that lncRNAs and circRNAs can sponge miRNAs, thereby influencing normal physiological processes and regulating mRNA expression and, thus, the physiological state of cells. This paper summarizes the mechanism of action and research progress of the three ncRNA and seven types of modalities. This summary is intended to provide new ideas for diagnosing and treating diseases and researching and developing new drugs.

RESUMO

The most prevalent viruses currently causing diarrhea are norovirus and rotavirus, and rapid and sensitive detection methods are essential for the early diagnosis of disease. The purpose of this study was to establish a sensitive single-tube two-stage nucleic acid amplification method-reverse transcription recombinase-assisted PCR (RT-RAP)-for simultaneous detection of norovirus GII and group A Rotavirus, with the first stage consisting of isothermal reverse transcription recombinase-aided amplification (RT-RAA) and the second stage consisting of qPCR (quantitative PCR). RT-RAP is more sensitive than either RT-RAA or qRT-PCR (quantitative RT-PCR) alone. And the addition of a barrier that can be disassembled after heating enabled the detection of samples within 1 h in a single closed tube. Sensitivity was 10 copies/reaction of norovirus (Novs) GII and group A rotavirus (RVA). In parallel, two hundred fecal specimens were used to evaluate the method and compare it with a commercial fluorescent quantitative RT-PCR. The data showed kappa values of 0.957 and 0.98 (p < 0.05) for detecting Novs GII and RVA by the two methods, indicating the potential of the newly established assay to be applied to clinical and laboratory testing.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease combined with depression is 1 of the 2 major diseases affecting physical and mental health. It has become a hot spot at the intersection of psychiatry and internal medicine. Most doctors call double heart medicine, which has a high incidence rate and a low diagnostic rate. Clinical research shows that Shugan Jieyu Decoction (SJD) has a better curative effect, increased safety, and fewer adverse reactions, but it lacks systematic evaluation. This study aims to integrate clinical data through network meta-analysis and provide more evidence-based medical evidence for clinical medication. METHODS: We searched 8 electronic databases: China knowledge network database, Wanfang, VIP, SinoMed, PubMed, Embase, WebofScience, Cochrane Library, and selected 22 randomized controlled trials from January 2012 to January 2022. The common primary endpoint was the relief of angina pectoris and the improvement of depression. Two researchers used Endnote9.1 software to conduct literature screening and information extraction according to the developed nano-passage standard, used Cochrane collaborative tool to evaluate the bias risk in the experiment, and then used RevMan5.3 software to assess the literature and data analysis synthesis. RESULTS: In 1908 patients with coronary heart disease and depression, the total effective rate of SJD in the treatment of angina pectoris was 3.49 (95% confidence interval, 1.93-6.29), as well as the network meta-analysis of improving depressive symptoms, anxiety, depression scores (SAS, SDS) and quality of life scores (HAMD), and reducing the indicators related to CPR and homocysteine. CONCLUSION: The analysis of this study shows that SJD can reduce the frequency of angina pectoris in patients with coronary heart disease and depression, alleviate anxiety and depression, provide a reference basis for clinical treatment, and select more effective intervention therapy.

RESUMO

Phase-gradient metasurfaces are two-dimensional (2D) optical elements that can manipulate light by imposing local, space-variant phase changes on an incident electromagnetic wave. These metasurfaces hold the potential and the promise to revolutionize photonics by providing ultrathin alternatives for a wide range of common optical elements such as bulky refractive optics, waveplates, polarizers, and axicons. However, the fabrication of state-of-the-art metasurfaces typically requires some time-consuming, expensive, and possibly hazardous processing steps. To overcome these limitations on conventional metasurface fabrication, a facile methodology to produce phase-gradient metasurfaces through one-step UV-curable resin printing is developed by our research group. The method dramatically reduces the required processing time and cost, as well as eliminates safety hazards. As a proof-of-concept, the advantages of the method are clearly demonstrated via a rapid reproduction of high-performance metalenses based on the Pancharatnam-Berry phase gradient concept in the visible spectrum.

RESUMO

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: As a typical prescription for soothing the liver, Xiangshao granule has a good effect on the symptoms of irritability and anxiety. Clinical evidence suggests that it has significant efficacy in the treatment of Premenstrual dysphoria disorder (PMDD). However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: PMDD is a common disease in women of childbearing age, seriously affecting their family, society, and daily work life. The registered herbal medicine, Xiangshao granules, is used for relieving PMDD dysphoria and irritability symptoms with excellent efficacy in China. This study was focused on the deep intervention mechanism of Xiangshao granules in treating PMDD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The vaginal smear and open field test were used to screen rats in nonreception phase of estrus cycle with similar macroscopic behaviors and regular estrus cycle. The rat model of PMDD irritability was established through social isolation and residential invasion, with which, the irritability symptoms of PMDD patients with menstrual cycle dependence was also well simulated. Elevated plus Maze Test and Social interaction activities were used to measure the anxiety-like behavior of rats. TUNEL Staining and Hematoxylin-Eosin staining were used to measure apoptosis of hippocampal neurons. RT-PCR, Western blot and immunofluorescence were used to measure the expression of GR, JIK, p-JIK, p38, P-P38, JNK, caspase 3, and caspase 12. RESULTS: In this study, Xiangshao granules showed consistent therapeutic effects similar with those in clinic, significantly reducing aggressive and anxiety-like behaviors with improved social skills in PMDD rats. In mechanism, Xiangshao granules lowered the apoptosis of hippocampal neurons and weakened the morphological damage of the hippocampal brain evidenced by the decreased mRNA and protein expression of glucocorticoid receptor, caspase-3, and caspase-12. In addition, administration of Xiangshao granules led to the decreased expression of JIK in the PMDD irritability rat model which agreed well with the previous studies. The JNK/p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) signaling pathway is abnormally activated in the hippocampal brain region of PMDD rats, while treated with Xiangshao granules could increase JIK expression and inhibit the abnormal activation of the JNK/p38 MAPK signaling pathway, effectively reducing the stress damage in the hippocampus. CONCLUSIONS: Xiangshao Granules Reduce the Aggressive Behavior and Hippocampal Injury of Premenstrual Irritability in Rats by Regulating JIK/JNK/p38 Signal Pathway.

RESUMO

Background: At present, people are susceptible to developing depression and anxiety disorders in response to stress. However, there is no specific medicine for anxiety. Os Draconis (OD, named "Long gu" in Chinese) are fossilized bones that have been used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat neurological diseases for thousands of years. Thus, we conducted this study to determine the biological basis for the anxiolytic effect of OD. Methods: In this study, novel carbon dots (OD-CDs) from OD decoctions were discovered and separated. OD-CDs were anatomized using nanomaterials characterization methods to characterize the morphological structure, optical properties, and functional group properties. Four behavioural tests were conducted to observe the behavioural activities of mice, including the open field test (OFT), light/dark box test (LDT), elevated plus maze test (EPMT), and novelty-suppressed feeding test (NSFT), to determine its anxiolytic effects. Moreover, we assessed the possible mechanisms of the OD-CDs by detecting hormones associated with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Results: OD-CDs were spherical and monodispersed with a narrow size distribution between 1 and 5 nm and had a yield of 3.67%. OD-CDs increased the activity time of mice in the central zone in the OFT. The mice in the experimental group showed more frequent activity in the light compartment and the open arms, in LDT and EPMT, respectively. In addition, OD-CDs shortened the feeding latency in the NSFT. Furthermore, the results after OD-CDs intervention showed a significant increase in serum serotonin (5-HT) and norepinephrine (NE). In addition, the concentrations of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ATCH), and corticosterone (CORT) were decreased. Conclusion: These results demonstrate a definite anxiolytic effect of OD-CDs and reveal the possible mechanism of action of OD-CDs' anxiolytic effect, which supports the research of OD for neurological disorders and a promising new trend of therapeutic approach and drug development.
